About this trip
This 11-day trip takes you through Sri Lanka's highlights, from misty mountains and tea country to golden beaches, with plenty of room to make the trip your own.
You'll track elephants in the wild, climb an ancient rock fortress, hike through hill country and share a home-cooked curry with a local family, all with a small group of fellow travellers.
There's a decent chunk of free time built in for optional activities, so you can choose your own pace rather than being marched through a fixed itinerary.
What you'll do
- Search for wild elephants in Udawalawe National Park
- Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress
- Learn to cook spicy curry with a local in Ella
- Hike through the hill country's tea-covered mountains
- Unwind on the beach in Hiriketiya
- The drive from Ella to Udawalawe winds down from the mountains to the coast and can feel slow, though the scenery makes up for it
- Some temple visits require your head to be uncovered — you can skip these if that doesn't suit you
- Plenty of free time is built in, so it suits people who want flexibility to plan their own optional activities
Cheapest live departure per day, in £, recorded by our tracker since 16 Jul. Never a brochure “was” price.
Worth it if you want seamless logistics, standout guides, and diverse landscapes fast. Think twice if you crave authentic local dining or dislike surprise extra costs and large groups.
- Tour guides (Sam, Prasad, Mathisha, Ranjan) consistently went beyond brief to arrange extras, share local knowledge, and personalise the experience.
- Iconic Kandy-to-Ella train advertised as highlight wasn't booked for large groups; reviewer waited hours for standing-room tickets instead.
- Meals and activities aren't fully included; tipping amount suggested upfront without transparency on how money was spent or group consensus.
- Groups skew young and Instagram-focused; larger groups (13+) make personalisation harder and group dynamics less predictable.
