About this trip
Fifteen days across Mexico and into Guatemala and Belize, tracing the old Aztec, Zapotec and Maya heartlands. You move from the noise and scale of Mexico City through colonial Oaxaca and on to the jungle ruins of Palenque, with tacos and tequila along the way to keep things grounded.
This is a proper cross-border overland route rather than a single-country loop, so expect plenty of miles by coach between stops. Time in city squares and markets is balanced against wilder stretches like the Sumidero Canyon and the ruins at Tikal.
If your dates line up with Dia de los Muertos, this is one of the better times to be in Mexico for it, with the celebrations adding a different energy to the usual sightseeing.
