Nomadic Mongolia

Start & end in Ulaanbaatar 14 days Up to 14

About this trip

Fourteen days moving through Mongolia the way much of the country still does — following the land rather than a fixed route. You'll cross gorges, sandstone mountains and open steppe in search of golden eagles, desert gazelles and the Mongolian horse.

This isn't a trip built around cities. It's built around distance, landscape and the rhythm of a nomadic life that around 40% of Mongolians still follow, with rural villages and ger camps standing in for hotels.

What you'll do

  • Travel through gorges and sandstone mountain country
  • Look for golden eagles and desert gazelles in the wild
  • Spend time with Mongolian horses in their home terrain
  • Sleep in traditional ger tents
  • Visit rural villages and see local customs firsthand
Good to know
  • Moderate pace with a lot of overland travel between areas
  • Accommodation is mostly ger tents and shared rooms, not hotels
  • Suits travellers who want landscape and culture over city sightseeing
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you crave vast landscapes, nomadic culture, and genuine human connection. Think twice if you need constant activity or dislike long van days.

  • Guide quality consistently exceptional; Gan-Erdene, Uugie, and others earned specific praise for knowledge, patience, and friendship.
  • Five to seven hours daily in vans is genuinely tough; beautiful breaks help, but it's relentless driving for two weeks.
  • Bring sleeping bag, eye mask, ear plugs, saline spray; gers lack top sheets and have early light, limited electricity.
  • Nomadic family homestay consistently cited as trip highlight; ger camps unique and cosy with staff lighting stoves in cold nights.
