About this trip

Mongolia spent so long closed off that its scale and emptiness still catch people out. This trip takes you through vast grasslands, past crumbling ruins and into the homes of herding families, covering ground that was once the heart of the largest land empire in history.

Much of the trip happens on the road, travelling together by private transport through remote terrain with no fixed timetable beyond reaching camp before dark. The reward is staying properly close to the land — in tourist ger camps with shared basic facilities, and in family gers where you sleep on the floor and live as the nomads do.

This is a group experience built around the journey itself rather than a checklist of daily activities. If you're happy to sit back, take the long drives as part of the adventure, and adapt to simple, sometimes unpredictable conditions, the landscapes and the people you meet along the way carry the trip.

What you'll do

  • Sleep in traditional ger camps and with nomadic herding families
  • Ride tough Mongolian horses across open grassland
  • Visit ancient ruins from the era of the Mongol empire
  • Cross vast steppe landscapes by private transport
  • Share meals and daily life with a local family in their ger
  • Travel deep into remote terrain away from modern conveniences
Good to know
  • Bring your own sleeping bag for the family ger stays, which have no bathroom facilities
  • Days involve long stretches of driving — the journey itself is a core part of the trip, not just a means to an end
  • Tourist camp facilities are simple and shared, with unpredictable water pressure and temperature
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want authentic Mongolia with excellent guides and don't mind early starts and basic homestays. Think twice if you need constant activity—downtime happens, especially early season.

  • Guides Bat-ogril and TEM were exceptionally knowledgeable, patient, and made the trip feel genuinely safe and special.
  • Small group, off-the-beaten-track itinerary with homestays created authentic cultural immersion and real group bonding.
  • Expect unexpected downtime, particularly if travelling early season when not all locations are fully operational.
  • Tour is genuinely difficult to do independently; Intrepid's logistics and local expertise handle that complexity well.
