Tusheti Tour: Explore The Unspoiled Wilderness

Start & end in Tbilisi 3 days Up to 6

About this trip

Tusheti sits on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, so remote it's only reachable by 4x4 and only for a short window each year. This three-day tour takes you into that isolation, through stone-built villages that most travellers to Georgia never see.

You'll move between Omalo, Dartlo, Dano and other small settlements, each with its own defensive towers and centuries of history built into the architecture. Expect mountain roads, quiet valleys and a slower pace of life than anywhere in Tbilisi.

There's also a stop at Alaverdi Monastery on the way, a medieval Orthodox site in the Alazani valley, before or after the mountain stretch.

What you'll do

  • Drive the 4x4-only route into Tusheti National Park
  • Explore Omalo, the region's largest village and trekking hub
  • Walk the cobblestone streets of Dartlo among stone houses
  • See the ancient defensive towers of Dano in the Pirikiti valley
  • Visit smaller villages like Kvavlo, Chesho, Parsma and Girevi
  • Stop at Alaverdi Monastery in the Alazani River valley
Good to know
  • Access is seasonal and depends on road conditions, so this is a trip for a specific window of the year
  • Private rooms are provided but the region is remote, so expect basic village accommodation rather than resort comfort
  • Suits travellers who want genuine remoteness and don't mind long drives on rough roads
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want raw mountain wilderness and expert local guides. Think twice if you need comfort or a leisurely pace.

  • Guides (Koba, Jonah, David) consistently praised for deep Georgian knowledge and safe navigation of steep, remote terrain.
  • Three days packs substantial ground; weather shifts daily so scenery and experience genuinely change throughout the trip.
  • Steep mountain 4WD driving dominates the itinerary; expect sustained rough terrain rather than leisurely exploration.
  • Kepney hotel accommodation basic but friendly; food quality high, though creature comforts minimal in remote Omalo.
