Northern Lights Exploration

Start & end in Keflavik 8 days Up to 16

About this trip

Eight days touring Iceland's winter landscapes with the specific aim of getting you under a dark sky when the Northern Lights are active. You're based in the same place for the run of it, with daily excursions out to the countryside rather than constant relocating.

The core of the trip is a six-night Northern Lights Academy: evening talks, films and guided lookouts that explain what you're seeing and help you actually spot the Aurora Borealis, rather than just standing outside hoping. By day you head out to places like the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the west and down toward the Vatnajökull glacier in the southeast.

It's a fully guided coach tour with breakfast included for seven nights, built around groups (up to 35 people) and workable for families as much as anyone else.

What you'll do

  • Explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in west Iceland
  • Visit the Vatnajökull glacier region in the southeast
  • Join evening lectures and film sessions on the Aurora Borealis through the Northern Lights Academy
  • Head out on guided lookouts away from city lights to search for the Northern Lights
  • Seven nights' accommodation with breakfast included
Good to know
  • Northern Lights sightings depend on weather and solar activity, so seeing them isn't guaranteed despite the guided lookouts
  • You stay in one base rather than changing hotels each night, with day trips out into the countryside
  • Suited to families and groups travelling together, with an English or German-speaking option
