About this trip
This self-drive route takes you through Istria and into Slovenia at your own pace, with a rental car and your own schedule between stops. It mixes Roman history, a compact capital city and coastal food towns with one of the region's best-known natural sights.
You start in Pula, exploring the old amphitheatre where gladiators once fought, then move on to Ljubljana to see how its castle and old town sit alongside a modern, youthful feel. Rijeka and the villages around it bring Mediterranean cooking into the mix, and a hike through Plitvice Lakes National Park gives you a proper day outdoors.
It is a private, self-guided trip, so you drive between towns and set your own timings, with no group to keep pace with.
