About this trip
This is an 11-day self-drive tour through Bulgaria, giving you the freedom to move at your own pace between the capital, the old Medieval hill towns, and the Black Sea coast.
You start in Sofia, a city that mixes modern life with layers of history going back to Antiquity, then drive to Veliko Tarnovo to explore its Medieval streets and hilltop views. From there the route runs to the coast, taking in Varna and the old towns of Nessebar and Sozopol, before turning inland through the countryside.
The final stretch brings you to Plovdiv and a rural stay near Bansko, where you get a real sense of village life, before looping back to Sofia to finish.
