Heart of Spain, Self-drive

This is a 9-day self-drive round trip through Castile and Extremadura, starting and finishing in Madrid, at your own pace with your own car.

You'll follow parts of the old Silver Way route, moving between medieval towns, Roman ruins and cities where Spanish history runs deep, from conquistador departure points to the university halls of Salamanca.

It suits travellers who want the freedom of driving themselves but with a route and stops already mapped out, taking in centuries of architecture, art and history along the way.

What you'll do

• Drive the historic Silver Way route through Castile and Extremadura

• Visit cathedrals, basilicas and monasteries along the route
• Walk through Salamanca, home to one of Spain's oldest universities
• Explore the towns conquistadors set out from before sailing to the Americas
