About this trip
Thirty days of overland travel across five South American countries, moving by bus from Rio de Janeiro all the way to La Paz. This is an independent, self-guided tour, so you'll share bus and accommodation services with other travellers but move at your own pace between stops.
The route takes in vibrant cities, waterfalls, mountain ranges and desert landscapes, crossing from the Atlantic coast through Argentina and Chile to the high Andes of Bolivia. Along the way you'll pass through Sao Paulo, Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires, Colonia, Mendoza, Santiago, Valparaiso, San Pedro de Atacama and Uyuni.
Buses, accommodation and highlight excursions are included, along with some airport and bus station transfers.
What you'll do
- Start out in Rio de Janeiro and travel on to Sao Paulo
- See the scale of Iguazu Falls on the Brazil-Argentina border
- Explore Buenos Aires and the colonial streets of Colonia
- Pass through Mendoza's wine country and over the Andes to Santiago and Valparaiso
- Cross the Atacama desert at San Pedro de Atacama
- Finish among the salt flats of Uyuni before arriving in La Paz
- Independent, self-guided style — you share transport and accommodation but there's no tour leader with you throughout
- Rated a moderate trip level, with long overland bus journeys between stops
- Blackout dates apply around 28 Dec-4 Jan, 9-18 Feb and 24-31 Mar (Rio's New Year, Carnaval and Easter periods)
