About this trip
Fifteen days across Mexico by coach, taking in Maya ruins, colonial cities, indigenous communities and a stretch of Caribbean coast to finish. It moves at a fair clip, covering a lot of ground with a mix of history, culture and downtime.
You will visit Chichen Itza, wander the streets of Merida and San Cristobal de las Casas, and share meals with Maya and Zapotec families in their homes. The route also takes you to Oaxaca before ending on the beaches of Playa del Carmen.
This is a fully guided group trip built around sightseeing and history, with coach travel linking the stops.
What you'll do
- Explore the Maya ruins at Chichen Itza
- Visit indigenous communities near San Cristobal de las Casas
- Share a pibil feast with a Maya family
- Learn about Zapotec culture over lunch in a local home
- Wander the streets of Merida and see Oaxaca's alebrijes
- Unwind on the beaches of Playa del Carmen
- Long travel days in a private vehicle, with stops to break things up along the way
- Guided tours of ruins and archaeological sites involve a fair amount of walking, so bring sturdy shoes and a moderate level of fitness
- Expect hot, humid conditions, so carry water and stay hydrated
Worth it if you want genuinely knowledgeable local guides and authentic cultural immersion. Think twice if you're paying extra for 'comfort' accommodation—it doesn't always justify the premium.
- Guides consistently excel at deep local knowledge and pivoting when plans change mid-tour.
- Home-cooked traditional food experiences and local site guides provide real cultural access, not tourist theatre.
- Comfort tier accommodation described as adequate but not worth the extra cost over standard tier.
- Group skews young professionals; older travellers may find limited peer connection unless lucky.
