About this trip
This 18-day route runs the length of Vietnam before crossing into Cambodia, taking in two distinct cultures rather than rushing through a checklist. You'll move from the limestone cliffs of Ha Long Bay down through the old imperial and trading towns of central Vietnam, into the pace of Ho Chi Minh City, then across the border to Phnom Penh and the temples of Angkor.
It's a trip built for covering ground and seeing a lot, which means some long travel days, including an overnight train with shared, basic facilities. In return you get a genuine sweep of the region rather than a single-country snapshot.
What you'll do
- Cruise the karst landscapes of Ha Long Bay by boat
- Explore the former imperial capital of Hue
- Wander the old town streets of Hoi An
- Take in the pace and street life of Ho Chi Minh City
- Discover Phnom Penh's history and culture
- Visit the temples of Angkor
- Includes an overnight train journey with shared, basic amenities
- Vietnam's heat and humidity can be intense depending on the season, worth checking before you travel
- Hot water at accommodation isn't always guaranteed
Worth it if you want authentic Southeast Asia with a solid group vibe and quality guides. Think twice if you value independence around meals or dislike long overland drives.
- Guide quality varies wildly; best ones are genuinely knowledgeable, caring, and humorous throughout the trip.
- Long overland drives from Cambodia to Thailand are exhausting; some guides pressure group meals, making solo exploration feel guilt-ridden.
- Ho Chi Minh City is very noisy and overwhelming; some guides charge full fees for activities despite Intrepid already covering transport.
- Halong Bay and Hoi An stand out as highlights; post-Covid, some locals visibly uncomfortable with tourists, affecting group atmosphere.
