About this trip
This eight-day road trip runs up Queensland's east coast from Brisbane to Cairns, hopping between beach towns and a fair few hours on the road in between.
You'll get off-road on the sand dunes of K'gari, cool off in the Whitsundays, slow down on Mission Beach and take in the buzz of Airlie Beach, with free time to explore the Great Barrier Reef along the way.
It's a sociable trip built around long travel days and a shared sense of getting stuck into the outdoors together — waterfalls, rainforest and beaches all feature.
What you'll do
- Off-road adventure across the dunes of K'gari (Fraser Island)
- Swim and explore the tropical waters of the Whitsundays
- Relax on the palm-fringed sands of Mission Beach
- Take in the nightlife and energy of Airlie Beach
- Free time to snorkel or dive the Great Barrier Reef
- Overnight train journey with RailBeds between destinations
- Expect some long travel days between stops — part of how you get to know the group
- The overnight train runs in RailBed class without a tour leader; if it's cancelled due to track works, alternative transport and an extra overnight stay are arranged instead
- Reef and water-based activities depend on weather and conditions and may be swapped for alternatives if cancelled
Worth it if you value a carefully curated itinerary with exceptional guides who adapt on the fly. Think twice if you expect luxury accommodation or transparent pre-trip communication.
- Tour guides consistently transform the experience—knowledgeable, flexible, fun, and genuinely invested in group happiness.
- Itinerary is well-researched with hidden gems; guides secure front-of-line access and thoughtfully plan toilet breaks at scenic spots.
- Early accommodation can be genuinely poor quality despite high daily costs (£500 per person); pre-trip details often vague.
- Small group dynamics and shared age range matter hugely; some natural attractions (Rainbow Beach, Lake MacKenzie drives) underwhelm.
