Classic Costa Rica

Start & end in San Jose 15 days Up to 16

About this trip

Fifteen days across Costa Rica, starting and finishing in San Jose, taking you through jungle, farmland, beaches and small towns that show why this country calls itself the rich coast.

You'll stay with a local family in Santa Rosa de Pocosol, joining them in the kitchen to cook a traditional meal, then move on to volcanic hot springs in La Fortuna and the cloud forest at Monteverde before finishing among the sloths and beaches of Manuel Antonio.

Much of this happens outdoors, so expect insects, occasional rustic conditions and a fair bit of walking. It's a hands-on, immersive way to see the country rather than a polished, air-conditioned one.

What you'll do

  • Cook and share a meal with a host family in Santa Rosa de Pocosol
  • Soak in volcanically heated springs at La Fortuna
  • Explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest with a wide range of optional activities
  • Spot three-toed sloths in Manuel Antonio National Park
  • Unwind on the beaches near Manuel Antonio
Good to know
  • The homestay involves basic, home-cooked meals and simple conditions — part of the appeal, but worth knowing in advance
  • Some optional activities need a moderate fitness level and proper walking shoes, though gentler alternatives are available
  • Costa Rica tends to cost more than neighbouring Central American countries, so budget accordingly
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you love wildlife, nature immersion, and don't mind paying extra for optional activities. Think twice if you're on a tight budget or need extensive meals and excursions included.

  • Guide quality is genuinely exceptional—Tayron and Marvin mentioned by name for deep knowledge, local connections, and going above and beyond expectations.
  • Wildlife encounters and rainforest immersion are the real deal: sloths, tree frogs, tarantulas, diverse birds in genuinely lush, remote hotel settings.
  • Excursions are substantially overpriced; travellers found identical activities elsewhere at one-third the cost. Do your own research before booking add-ons.
  • Physical demands not clearly communicated upfront; trip suited very fit individuals despite brochure suggesting suitability up to age ninety-nine.
