About this trip
This 12-day trip runs the length of Vietnam, from Hanoi in the north down to Ho Chi Minh City, taking in Hue and Hoi An along the way. Expect a mix of cruising, kayaking, riding and simply eating your way through some of the country's best food.
You'll get a proper feel for Vietnamese life, from sailing calm waters around Cat Ba Island to picking ingredients straight from a local chef's garden for your own lunch. There's plenty of free time built in too, so you can wander, eat and explore at your own pace between the group activities.
It's a long way to cover, including overnight trains, and accommodation is shared and fairly basic throughout. The trade-off is getting close to local life rather than staying insulated from it.
What you'll do
- Explore the old quarter and street food scene in Hanoi
- Sail and kayak around Cat Ba Island
- Wander the historic streets of Hoi An
- Cook a meal using ingredients you pick yourself from a local chef's garden
- Travel overnight by train between cities
- Finish in the energy of Ho Chi Minh City
- Covers a lot of ground, including at least one overnight train
- Accommodation and facilities are shared and basic
- Plenty of free time each day to explore independently
Worth it if you want a well-structured Vietnam intro with a genuinely good guide. Think twice if you need hand-holding on logistics—this relies on leader quality.
- Guides like Tuyet, Tuan, Lucky, Thao consistently transform the trip; they're knowledgeable, funny, and bond genuinely with the group.
- Itinerary is properly balanced: local culture, food, sightseeing, and free time to suit your own pace and interests.
- Optional paid activities exist but reviewers found them good value; budget extra beyond the base cost.
- 18-35 age limit genuinely works for solo travellers; you'll actually make lasting friendships, not just travel buddies.
