About this trip
This is an overland journey from mainland East Africa to Zanzibar, travelling by purpose-built vehicle with a small group and a local leader. You camp most nights, including in the Serengeti with no barriers between you and the wildlife, so it's a hands-on, roughing-it kind of trip rather than a polished one.
The route takes in some of the region's best-known wildlife areas alongside quieter, more human moments — a mountain trail in the Usambaras, a community visit near Mto wa Mbu — before finishing on Zanzibar's coast for dhow sailing and seafood.
Expect early starts, long driving days, and a schedule that bends to weather and road conditions. It rewards people happy to embrace the unpredictability rather than fight it.
What you'll do
- Search for lions and other wildlife on game drives through the Serengeti
- Scan the Ngorongoro Crater for the Big Five
- Hike a mountain trail in the Usambara Mountains
- Visit local communities near Mto wa Mbu
- Sail a traditional dhow on the Indian Ocean off Zanzibar
- Share a seafood meal in Zanzibar with the group
- Overland camping trip — you pitch your own tent, sometimes in the bush with no facilities
- Early starts are common, both for safari light and to beat traffic on long travel days
- Timings can shift with weather and road conditions, so plan for a flexible schedule
Worth it if you want genuine safari wildlife encounters and local cultural immersion with excellent guides. Think twice if you dislike long driving days between destinations.
- Guides consistently located well-camouflaged animals at close range; multiple reviewers named standout guides by name.
- Camp food was notably good; cook Sylvia and Wilson earned specific praise for meal quality and care.
- Significant stretches of driving between locations; one reviewer flagged this as excessive for a 12-day trip.
- Group dynamics matter here; reviewers repeatedly praised their fellow travellers, suggesting careful group composition.
