About this trip
Sri Lanka packs in an unusual mix of faiths and landscapes, and this 12-day trip takes you through most of it, starting in laidback Negombo and working up to the ancient city of Anuradhapura.
You'll head into the north to Jaffna, a region only opened to tourism in recent years, then across to the coast at Trincomalee before settling into the temple town of Kandy. Along the way there's time for wildlife safaris and for meeting local families in their homes.
It's a fully guided group trip with private rooms throughout, moving at an easy pace given how much ground it covers.
What you'll do
- Wander the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura
- Explore Jaffna, only recently reopened to visitors after 30 years
- Spend time on the coastline around Trincomalee
- Visit the temples of Kandy, the spiritual heart of the country
- Look out for wildlife on safari
- Share food and stories with local families
- Jaffna is quieter and less developed than the rest of Sri Lanka, with accommodation and services still catching up
- Temperatures stay high year-round, with short sharp monsoons in the south-west during summer — pack sun protection and drink plenty of water
- Some temples require your head to be uncovered; you can skip these visits if that doesn't suit you
Worth it if you want an authentically guided cultural deep-dive with standout local expertise. Think twice if you're vegetarian without pre-warning or expect luxury accommodation.
- Guides like Mahendra and Prabarth are genuinely exceptional—knowledgeable, patient, go the extra mile consistently.
- Food experiences—cooking classes, market visits—are exceptional; Sri Lanka emerges as a serious foodie destination.
- Vegetarian dietary requirements aren't flagged in advance; cooking activities skew heavily meat-orientated without warning.
- Accommodation quality varies and some hotels look tired; inspect before booking if comfort matters to you.
