About this trip
Ten days of hiking, cycling and kayaking across Sri Lanka, moving from Negombo to Colombo through tea country, ancient ruins and mountain scenery. This is a trip for people who'd rather see a place by climbing, pedalling or paddling through it than looking at it from a coach window.
You'll cycle through tea plantations and the Golden Valley of Ceylon, kayak down rivers and hike up to the ruins at Sigiriya. The pace mixes big physical days with genuine cultural stops at UNESCO sites and ancient fortresses.
It's a proper outdoors trip through a country that has coastlines, mountains and national parks packed close together, so the landscape changes fast and often.
What you'll do
- Climb Sigiriya's Lion Rock fortress
- Cycle through tea plantations and the Golden Valley of Ceylon
- Kayak down a Sri Lankan river
- Hike through the Dimbulagala mountain region
- Travel overland from Negombo to Colombo through varied terrain
- Requires a good level of fitness, though the activities themselves are run at a relaxed pace and need no prior experience
- You'll need to be a competent swimmer for the kayaking section
- Some temple visits require your head to be uncovered — you can skip these if that doesn't suit you
Worth it if you're fit enough for challenging terrain and value good organisation with excellent guides. Think twice if you need constant socialising or prefer guides fully off-duty in downtime.
- Guides Nandana and Ku were knowledgeable, well-organised, and handled unexpected crises like medical emergencies smoothly.
- The itinerary delivers on its promise: hiking, biking, and kayaking genuinely featured with good pacing throughout.
- One guide spent considerable time on phone and computer; didn't socialise with group in evenings, creating distance.
- Trip demands fitness for challenging terrain and acceptance of basic environmental conditions; not a comfort holiday.
