Tunisia Expedition

About this trip

Twelve days across Tunisia, taking in waterfront medinas, Roman ruins, mountains and the edge of the Sahara. It's a trip that moves through a lot of different landscapes without feeling rushed, from coast to desert to underground cave dwellings.

You'll walk through historic sites without the crowds you'd get elsewhere in the Mediterranean, eat food shaped by centuries of North African, Italian and Spanish influence, and spend time with people who live and work in these places, including local female artisans and Amazigh guides in the desert.

The Sahara stretch is a highlight in itself, trekking by day and camping under the stars at night, with a proper fixed camp rather than basic bivouac. Add in salt lakes, oases and a couple of nights underground, and it's a trip that shows you a side of Tunisia most visitors don't see.

What you'll do

  • Explore Roman ruins without the crowds
  • Trek the Sahara with local Amazigh guides
  • Camp under desert stars in a fixed Sahara camp
  • Sleep a couple of nights in an underground cave dwelling
  • Meet local female artisans keeping traditional crafts alive
  • Walk waterfront medinas and see the pink-hued salt lakes and turquoise coast
Good to know
  • Includes hikes on rocky terrain, some optional — bring sturdy, closed-toed shoes with good support
  • Sahara camping is in fixed tents with proper beds and nearby bathroom facilities, no sleeping bag needed, but pack warm layers for cool desert nights
  • Involves a fair amount of walking at historic sites, often with little shade, so bring a hat and sun protection
