Best of Northwest of Vietnam 14 Days Soft Trek

Start & end in Hanoi 14 days Up to 12

About this trip

Fourteen days of walking through Vietnam's mountainous northwest, moving from village to village across terraced rice fields and through the territory of several ethnic minority groups. It is a soft trek — the walking is gentle rather than technical, built around getting out of the cities and into the hills.

Along the way you meet Hmong communities in the high mountains, Dao families in their distinctive dress, Lu women known for their silver jewellery, and Thai villages, plus a night spent in a local house sharing a meal with your hosts.

The region's landscape changes with the farming seasons, so the rice terraces look different depending on when you go, and local markets give a working, everyday view of the area rather than a staged one.

What you'll do

  • Walk between villages through terraced rice fields
  • Spend a night in a local homestay and share a meal with your hosts
  • Visit markets and villages of Hmong, Dao, Lu and Thai communities
  • Take in valley and mountain views across Vietnam's northwest
Good to know
  • Billed as a soft trek — daily walking is at an easy pace, not technical climbing
  • Available for Christmas and New Year departures, and can be run as a family or custom group trip
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you value reliable organisation and local access. Think twice if you need detailed itinerary specifics before booking.

  • Guides and logistics genuinely solid; Danny Nguyen's team consistently punctual and easy to reach.
  • Homestays alongside tourist sites give real access to local life, not just postcard Vietnam.
  • Reviews praise overall experience but contain zero detail on daily activities, difficulty level or costs.
