About this trip
Twenty days across Vietnam, covering the full stretch from the mountains in the north to the beaches in the south. It moves through cities, coastline, and countryside, mixing history, culture and a proper stretch of downtime at the end.
You start in the hills around Sapa, then head to Halong Bay for a night on the water, before working south through Hue and Hoi An's temple ruins to Ho Chi Minh City. The final days are spent on Phu Quoc Island, away from the itinerary altogether.
It suits people who want to see a lot of Vietnam properly rather than skim the highlights, with enough pace to cover ground but a real beach stretch built in to recover at the end.
What you'll do
- Trek through the ethnic minority villages around Sapa
- Overnight cruise on Halong Bay
- Explore the Champa temple ruins at My Son Sanctuary
- Walk the Imperial Citadel and royal tombs in Hue
- Visit the Cao Dai Temple and Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City
- Unwind on the beaches of Phu Quoc Island
- A long trip covering a lot of ground — expect several changes of base before the Phu Quoc stretch
- Rated easy, so the pace suits families and travellers who don't want a physically demanding trek
- Runs over Christmas and New Year, which suits those wanting to be away for the holidays
Worth it if you value seamless organisation and knowledgeable local guides. Think twice if temple fatigue is a concern.
- Tony and Danny nail the logistics; guides have deep knowledge and timing runs to perfection across 20 days.
- Staying in guesthouses with locals beats standard hotels; Halong Bay cruise and Phu Quoc 5-star hotel genuinely stand out.
- Heavy dose of Buddha temples and pagodas throughout; one reviewer noted too many visits to the same type of site.
- Hotels are 4-5 star and well-placed; itinerary covers Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, Halong Bay and island time.
