About this trip
Seven days that move from Ho Chi Minh City in the south up to Hanoi, Mai Chau Valley and Halong Bay in the north, covering a lot of Vietnam's history, culture and scenery in a short space of time.
You start with the Cu Chi Tunnels and Ho Chi Minh City before heading north for a full day exploring Hanoi's temples and historic sites, then out to the rice paddies of Mai Chau and a night afloat on Halong Bay.
It's a fully guided group trip with a mix of city sightseeing, rural valley life and a boat cruise, plus Vietnamese food along the way from street stalls to fresh seafood on board.
What you'll do
- Walk through the Cu Chi Tunnels used by the Viet Cong
- Full day city tour of Hanoi, including the Temple of Literature and Ho Chi Minh complex
- Stay in Mai Chau Valley among rice paddies and traditional stilt houses
- Overnight at Ba Khan Village Resort in the valley
- Cruise Halong Bay's limestone karsts aboard a wooden junk boat, staying overnight on board
- Eat local dishes from Ho Chi Minh street food to Hanoi cuisine and seafood on the cruise
- Covers south and north Vietnam in 7 days, so expect a fast pace with a change of base most nights
- Fully guided throughout, which suits families and those who'd rather not organise logistics themselves
Worth it if you want hassle-free logistics and don't mind changing guides daily. Think twice if you're solo, need deep cultural immersion, or expect marketing claims to match reality.
- Danny and guides consistently went above and beyond—rescheduled prison tour after flight delay, kept trip running smoothly despite disruptions.
- Changing guides and groups daily makes it hard to bond with other travellers; solo travellers particularly felt isolated and awkward at meals.
- Marketing promises don't match reality: authentic Chinese Junk was a riverboat with unused sails; rushed museum visits; significant travel time versus experience time.
- One traveller reported bedbugs or fleas in hotel accommodation; verify accommodation hygiene standards when booking, especially budget options.
