Nairobi To Kigali (13 Days) Gorillas & Gameparks

This overland route runs from Nairobi to Kigali, focusing on some of East Africa's quieter national parks rather than the big-name reserves. The soda and freshwater lakes along the way draw serious birdlife and wildlife, and you get rare chances to do walking safaris instead of just game drives from a vehicle.

The trip is built around a yellow overland expedition truck, and it runs on a participatory basis — you take turns helping with shopping, cooking and the daily jobs that keep the group moving. Expect dust, some dishevelment, and not every night having a hot shower.

An optional trek through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or the Virunga Mountains in search of mountain gorillas is a highlight for those who add it on. Uganda also brings the chance to try quad biking, kayaking or whitewater rafting if you want a different kind of adrenaline.
