About this trip
This 16-day journey takes you through all four countries of the classic Central Asia route, starting in Almaty and moving on through Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
It's a private trip, so it's just you (and anyone travelling with you), with guiding provided at points along the way rather than throughout. The focus is on history and city culture across a region that changes character at every border.
With a moderate pace over more than two weeks, it suits families and small groups who want to see the region properly rather than rush through it.
What you'll do
- Begin in Almaty, Kazakhstan
- Travel on into Kyrgyzstan
- Explore the historic cities of Uzbekistan
- Cross into Turkmenistan to complete the four-country route
- Private trip — travels just with your own group
- Partially guided, so some sections are more independent than others
- Moderate pace suited to families as well as couples or friends
Worth it if you're curious about Central Asia's history and culture with guides who genuinely know their stuff. Think twice if you dislike long travel days and unpredictable local logistics.
- Guides are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and punctual; seamless handovers between multiple guides across countries.
- Turkmenistan border crossing is problematic; need driver/guide phone numbers for immigration, and currency exchange is unofficial-rate only with USD cash.
- Heavy travel schedule: three internal flights, train journey, and many long vehicle days drain energy significantly.
- Some hotel standards are low; communication issues and language barriers with local guides occasionally occur but rarely corrected post-feedback.
