This three-day drive from Fes to Marrakech takes you over the Middle Atlas Mountains and down into the Sahara, with a night in a desert camp at the heart of it. It's a fixed route with a lot of ground covered, so expect long stretches in the vehicle broken up by striking scenery and stops in Berber villages.

The centrepiece is Merzouga, where you ride camels out into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for sunset and sleep in a desert camp under an open sky. From there the route winds back through gorges, oases and mountain passes on the way to Marrakech.
