About this trip
This is a trip built around eating the way Cambodians actually eat — pepper rather than chilli, fresh herbs, rice and freshwater fish, at local beer halls and family tables rather than tourist restaurants.
You travel overland from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, taking in Kampot, Battambang and Angkor Wat along the way, with food as the thread that connects the stops.
It also doesn't shy away from Cambodia's recent history, with time built in to visit sites connected to the Khmer Rouge period, though this is optional if you'd rather not.
What you'll do
- Eat at local beer halls and family homes in and around Phnom Penh
- Explore the riverside town of Kampot
- Visit Battambang and the surrounding countryside
- See the temples of Angkor Wat
- Option to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
- Cambodian cuisine leans heavily on meat and seafood, so vegetarians and vegans should check the itinerary carefully before booking
- Temple visits require modest dress — shoulders and knees covered, so pack accordingly
- It gets very hot, and temple-hopping is tiring, so sun protection and water are essential
Worth it if you value knowledgeable local guides and intimate small groups. Think twice if long travel days between locations frustrate you.
- Guides like Channa, Hai, and Ly are genuinely passionate, professionally trained, and patient with travellers throughout.
- Small groups of 7-8 people create real friendships and allow meaningful interaction with locals impossible alone.
- Multiple five-plus-hour travel days between locations; itinerary timing doesn't account for realistic delays to activities.
- Angkor Panoramic hotel is average and ageing; most other accommodations are genuinely beautiful and well-chosen.
