About this trip
A private, six-day drive through Transylvania tracing the Dracula legend from Bucharest and back, with your own guide and hotel pick-up throughout. It mixes the historical figure of Vlad Dracula with the Bram Stoker myth, taking in castles, fortresses and a monastery said to hold his tomb.
This is a slower, small-group (or just you) way to see Romania's medieval towns and mountain scenery, with nights spent in local pensions and rural homestays rather than city hotels.
What you'll do
- Walk the medieval citadel of Sighisoara, Vlad Dracula's birthplace
- Tour Bran Castle and Hunedoara's Hunyad Castle
- See the fortified churches of Biertan and Prejmer, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites
- Visit Snagov Monastery, said to hold Dracula's tomb
- Explore Turda Salt Mine and the 19th-century Peles Castle
- Stop at Curtea de Arges Monastery, a centre of Romanian Orthodox tradition
- Poienari Fortress is under renovation and can only be viewed from outside
- Peles Castle is closed on Mondays
- The Transfagarasan road is closed from October to July, so the route crosses the mountains via Olt Valley instead, with an overnight in Turda rather than Borgo Pass
Cheapest live departure per day, in £, recorded by our tracker since 16 Jul. Never a brochure “was” price.
Worth it if you book well in advance for decent accommodation and get a quality guide. Think twice if booking last-minute with specific room requests or travelling with young children and luggage.
- Guides like Bianca, Mimi and Bogdan are genuinely knowledgeable, patient and time-manage sites to avoid crowds.
- Homestays with hosts like Adriana offer authentic Romanian food, wine and a warm, personal connection.
- Book 5+ months ahead; last-minute bookings (10 days) result in poor accommodation quality despite requests.
- One driver's reckless speeding, poor navigation, verbal aggression and extortionate damage demands marred an otherwise good tour.
