Ultimate Balkans & Transylvania

Bucharest → Athens 19 days Up to 40

About this trip

Nineteen days moving through Transylvania and down into the Balkans, covering a lot of ground and a lot of history along the way. You start among Saxon villages and hilltop citadels in Romania, tracing the Dracula legends, then head south through a run of capital cities before finishing on the coast and in Athens.

It's a group trip with a guide throughout, easy-paced in terms of activity but fast in terms of geography — you'll cover several countries and cultures in under three weeks, from Sofia and Skopje to Tirana and Belgrade.

The finish brings a change of scene: the turquoise water of the Adriatic coast and the ancient ruins of Athens, a contrast to the medieval castles and communist-era cities earlier in the trip.

What you'll do

  • Explore Transylvania's Saxon villages and hilltop citadels
  • Follow the Dracula myths through Romania's castles
  • Spend time in Sofia, Skopje, Tirana and Belgrade
  • Swim in the Adriatic coast's clear water
  • See the ancient ruins of Athens
Good to know
  • A lot of cities in a short time — better suited to those who like a packed itinerary over lingering in one place
  • Shared rooms throughout, so factor that in if you value your own space
  • Easy activity level, but the travel days between countries add up over 19 days
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're keen on Balkan history, culture and seeing plenty of ground fast. Think twice if you want leisurely pacing, consistent comfort, or worry about group dynamics on coaches.

  • Guides Gabriel, Simon and the third were genuinely excellent at explaining culture and history throughout.
  • Bus air conditioning failed Romania to Bulgaria; seat rotation not enforced, leaving some stuck at back daily.
  • Balkan Nights dinner in North Macedonia was overpriced with poor food; local Ohrid restaurants were far superior.
  • Three separate itineraries spliced together means uneven pacing: Bulgaria-Greece section had excessive bus time, fewer photo stops.
