What happens if my group tour doesn't fill up?

The short answer

One of three things: it runs anyway (many operators guarantee departures once you've paid a deposit — G Adventures guarantees 100% of confirmed departures), it runs as a smaller group, or — the risk case — it's cancelled or merged with a nearby date, with a transfer or refund offered. Check the operator's guarantee policy before booking.

The industry has moved strongly toward guaranteed departures because cancellations poison trust. G Adventures guarantees every confirmed departure; TourRadar marks "Guaranteed" on departures that will definitely run; WeRoad shows a status ladder (available → confirmed → final spots) so you can see exactly where a date stands before you book.

The practical protections: book departures already marked guaranteed/confirmed where possible, don't book non-refundable flights until the departure is confirmed, and know the operator's policy — if they cancel, you're normally offered an alternative date or a full refund, but *your* flight costs are yours (another reason for travel insurance with cancellation cover).

We verify seat counts on departures weekly — the module below is live. Departures we list with seats taken are real bookings, not marketing.
