About this trip
This is a cultural tour through Bhutan's western valleys, taking in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Wangduephodrang at a pace that lets you actually settle into each place rather than rush through it.
You'll spend your days among monasteries, dzongs and chortens, learning the history behind them, while also crossing the Dochula Pass for Himalayan views and descending into the subtropical Punakha Valley.
It's as much about the people and the pace of life as the sights — expect plenty of contact with local history and Buddhist tradition alongside the trekking and sightseeing.
What you'll do
- Hike up to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) above the Paro Valley
- Visit the Ta Dzong Museum and Rimpong Dzong with its wooden cantilevered bridge
- Explore Thimphu's National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Temple and National Library
- Cross the 3050m Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens and prayer flag lines
- See Punakha Dzong and the Chimi Lhakhang, temple of the 'Divine Madman'
- Involves a proper uphill hike to reach Tiger's Nest, so some fitness helps
- Partially guided, so expect a mix of led activities and independent time
- Covers several valleys, with a mountain pass crossing between Thimphu and Punakha
