About this trip
Bhutan kept itself closed off from the outside world until the 1960s, and this seven-day route through the western districts shows why it still feels apart from anywhere else — forests cover most of the country, and daily life still runs on Buddhist tradition rather than the pace you're used to.
You'll move through Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and the Phobjikha valley, taking in fortress-monasteries, rural villages and one serious hike up to Tiger's Nest, the monastery built into an 800 metre cliff face.
It's a guided trip with a mix of walking, culture and a night with a farming family, aimed at travellers who want to understand Bhutan rather than just tick it off.
What you'll do
- Hike up to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest), the cliffside monastery dating to the 8th century
- Visit the fortress-dzongs of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang
- Hike to Tango Monastery, built in 1689 on a steep mountainside
- Walk farmland trails through the Phobjikha glacial valley, with black-necked cranes visible in winter
- Spend a night at a farmhouse and help prepare a traditional Bhutanese dinner
- Explore rural villages and isolated farms across the four western districts
- The Tiger's Nest hike is a genuine climb, not a stroll — worth being reasonably fit for
- Only two airlines fly into Bhutan and seats sell out months ahead, so flights need booking early
- Includes one night in a farmhouse rather than a hotel, for a closer look at rural life
Worth it if you value personalized service, stunning scenery, and genuine cultural immersion. Think twice if you need vibrant nightlife or guaranteed hiking conditions.
- Guides and drivers consistently memorable—Tashi, Norbu, Kezang create genuine friendships, not transactional service.
- Itineraries well-paced with sufficient time at each spot; temples, festivals, hikes, and food all covered thoughtfully.
- Some advertised hikes currently unusable; check specific trail conditions before booking, not just itinerary description.
- Entrance fees and US$100 government charge excluded from listed price; budget accordingly when comparing operators.
