About this trip
This is a 10-day overland journey up the West Australian coast, from Perth to Broome, covering a huge amount of ground and an even bigger range of landscapes — desert, gorges, reef, red outback and empty beaches.
You camp along the way as a group, moving through places like the Pinnacles, Kalbarri, Ningaloo Reef and Karijini, with plenty of time in the water and on the trail rather than just looking out of a bus window.
It suits people who want variety over depth — wildlife one day, gorge hikes the next, reef snorkelling after that — and don't mind camping and long driving days as the price of seeing this much of WA.
What you'll do
- Walk among the limestone formations of the Pinnacles Desert
- See the pink waters of Lake Port Gregory and hike the gorges of Kalbarri National Park
- Swim with dolphins at Monkey Mia and see ancient stromatolites at Hamelin Pool
- Snorkel Ningaloo Reef at Coral Bay and Cape Range National Park
- Explore the gorges and waterfalls of Karijini National Park in the Pilbara
- Relax on Shell Beach and 80-Mile Beach
- Camping-based trip with shared rooms/tents, so expect a basic, hands-on setup rather than hotel comforts
- Covers a lot of distance over 10 days, with long drives between stops
- Moderate activity level — includes hiking in gorges and national parks
Worth it if you want incredible WA landscapes and genuinely excellent guides. Think twice if you need comfortable vehicle conditions or prefer booking direct to avoid Intrepid markup.
- Guides consistently exceptional: Wokka, Flik, Lucy, Tom, Jared, Jodie all praised for knowledge, enthusiasm and going beyond their remit.
- Itinerary hits the mark: Kalbarri, Ningaloo, Karijini and optional manta ray or whale shark swims deliver genuinely stunning Western Australian landscapes.
- Tour buses poorly designed: broken seat latches, inadequate storage, high seat backs blocking countryside views, missing drink nets frustrate comfort.
- Book direct with Kimberly Wild, not Intrepid: intermediary adds 3% markup plus takes additional commission from operator.
