About this trip
Five days in a 4WD through the Top End, covering Kakadu, Katherine Gorge and Litchfield National Parks. Expect ancient rock art, waterfalls, croc-spotting and long days outdoors with a small group.
You camp out each night at private bush campsites, in twin safari tents or swags, cooking meals together over the campfire with your guide. It's hands-on and communal rather than luxury, with sunsets, stargazing and a fair bit of hiking in between.
Good for anyone who wants proper outback immersion rather than a polished resort experience — you'll be swimming in plunge pools, walking through monsoon forest, and doing your share of the camp chores.
What you'll do
- See Aboriginal rock art and sunset views at Ubirr Rock
- Watch for crocodiles and barramundi at Cahills Crossing
- Take a wildlife cruise through the Mary River Wetlands
- Cruise Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park for two hours
- Swim in Litchfield's plunge pools at Florence Falls, Buley Rockholes and Wangi Falls
- Hike past magnetic termite mounds and through Kakadu's rocky riverbeds and rainforest
- Camping throughout, in safari tents or swags, with communal bush cooking as part of the experience
- Moderate pace with regular hiking between sites
- Some waterfalls and rock art walks depend on seasonal conditions and access
Worth it if you prioritise expert guides and iconic landscapes. Think twice if budget food and basic camp facilities are dealbreakers.
- Guides like Leigh, Sanna and Jay combine genuine expertise on geology, Aboriginal culture and history with real personality and laughter.
- Scenery delivers: plunge pools, rock paintings, waterfalls and landscapes you cannot reach alone.
- Food quality varies wildly—some praise home-cooked meals, others report cheap wraps and basic pasta despite paying £850 per day.
- Camp accommodation described as both surprisingly comfortable and poor for the price; shared bathrooms for ten a real squeeze.
