South Australia Outback Adventure

Start & end in Adelaide 10 days Up to 12

About this trip

Ten days through South Australia's Outback, starting from Adelaide and heading into genuinely remote country. You get a mix of landscape, wildlife and culture, from opal-mining towns to First Nations stories to nights spent under properly dark skies.

The pace is moderate and guided throughout, with a knowledgeable leader driving the group between sites and plenty of free time built in for optional hikes, scenic flights or 4WD add-ons. It's not a soft, polished version of the Outback - roads can be affected by weather, phone signal drops out for stretches, and you'll spend real time together in a shared vehicle.

Along the way there's also a change of pace in the Clare Valley, where wine replaces red dust for an afternoon, before you're back into the wide, empty landscapes that define this trip.

What you'll do

  • Explore Coober Pedy, Australia's opal capital
  • See the silo art dotted through the region
  • Stargaze in Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park
  • Hear traditional stories from the Adnyamathanha people
  • Spend time in Arkaroola wildlife sanctuary
  • Taste wines in the Clare Valley
Good to know
  • Remote route with extended stretches of no phone reception, and food and dietary choices can be limited
  • You travel in a private group vehicle, which can feel cramped over long drives
  • Weather can be extreme - expect serious heat in summer and cold nights in winter, so pick your departure date with the season in mind
