Chitwan Jungle Safari

Kathmandu → Lumbini 3 days Up to 12

About this trip

Three days in Chitwan National Park, a lowland stretch of subtropical jungle that's about as far from the Himalayan image of Nepal as you can get. This is a slower, wilder side of the country, built around river, forest and grassland rather than mountain trails.

You'll spend time with the Tharu community, whose history is bound up with this forest, and see their traditional dance as part of a cultural evening. Then it's out into the park itself — a canoe ride along the Rapti or Narayani river watching for crocodiles, jeep safaris tracking one-horned rhino, and guided walks through the jungle on foot.

It's an easy-paced trip that suits families and anyone wanting a mix of wildlife, river and culture without much physical demand.

What you'll do

  • Jeep safari tracking one-horned rhino and, with luck, Royal Bengal tiger
  • Canoe ride on the Rapti or Narayani river spotting gharials and mugger crocodiles
  • Guided jungle walks through Chitwan National Park
  • Tharu cultural dance performance and community visit
  • Visit to the elephant breeding centre
  • Bird watching in the park's grassland and forest
Good to know
  • Easy-paced and family-friendly rather than adventure-heavy
  • Tiger sightings are possible but not guaranteed — rhino sightings are far more likely
  • Accommodation is comfortable rather than basic camping

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want authentic jungle immersion with elephant safaris and wildlife spotting. Think twice if you need luxury comfort or dislike early starts and long coach journeys.

  • Elephant back safaris genuinely deliver: reviewers spotted rhinos, deer, crocodiles, diverse birds consistently.
  • Guide quality stands out; Harry spotted distant wildlife expertly, making the experience richer.
  • Long coach days to and from Kathmandu built into the itinerary; factor in travel fatigue.
  • Packed three-day schedule covers elephant breeding, canoeing, village walks, cultural shows; expect early starts.
