About this trip
This is a seven-day trek along Iceland's Laugavegur trail, one of the country's classic multi-day hiking routes, finishing with a guided glacier hike. You're on foot for most of the week, moving through Iceland's interior on marked trails with a guide leading the group throughout.
Nights are spent in mountain huts rather than tents, so you get a roof, a bunk and shared facilities rather than a full wilderness camp setup. It's a serious hiking trip built around daily walking, with the glacier hike as the final test at the end of the route.
What you'll do
- Trek the full Laugavegur trail across Iceland's highlands
- Guided glacier hike to close out the trip
- Overnight in mountain hut accommodation each night
- Fully guided throughout, so no route-finding on your own
- This is a serious, physically demanding hiking trip rather than a gentle walk
- Hut accommodation means shared rooms and facilities, not private lodging
- Good fitness and proper hiking gear matter given the multi-day walking and glacier day
Worth it if you're a confident hiker who can handle loose rocky terrain and communal hut living. Think twice if you need detailed Icelandic cultural context or expect plentiful fresh food.
- Scenery genuinely spectacular with varied terrain; early July timing lets you walk across melting snow on day 2.
- Guide quality wildly inconsistent: some excel (Basia, Stephen), others lack Icelandic knowledge, mispronounce words, and micromanage experienced hikers.
- Food undersupplied on trek—hummus, mustard, cucumber, fruit ran out mid-trip; too many cookies, not enough produce or protein.
- Hut accommodation cramped with child-sized mattresses; double bookings happen; communal facilities stretched with large groups.
