Laugavegur & Fimmvörðuháls Trek - Huts

Start & end in Reykjavik 6 days Up to 16

About this trip

Six days on foot across Iceland's southern highlands, linking two of the country's best-known trails. You walk the Laugavegur route through shifting volcanic landscape, then push on over the Fimmvörðuháls pass between two glaciers.

Nights are spent in mountain huts along the way, so you carry a lighter pack than a full camping trip while still feeling well out in the wild. The terrain varies from rhyolite hills and geothermal steam to black sand and lava fields.

It's a guided trek rated moderate, built around consecutive days of walking rather than a single big push, ending near the volcanic craters formed in the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

What you'll do

  • Hike the full Laugavegur Trail through multicoloured rhyolite mountains
  • Cross geothermal areas with steaming vents and hot springs
  • Trek the Fimmvörðuháls pass between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers
  • See the Magni and Modi craters formed by the 2010 eruption
  • Sleep in mountain huts along the route each night
Good to know
  • Moderate-rated trek with multiple consecutive walking days, so a reasonable level of fitness helps
  • Accommodation is in shared mountain huts rather than hotels
  • Weather on the highland sections can change quickly, which affects pace and visibility
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're moderately fit and love raw Icelandic landscape. Think twice if you're slower-paced or need intimate group attention.

  • 16 people with one guide causes bottlenecks; multiple reviewers flagged waiting for faster hikers and tight hut dining.
  • Guides consistently praised for passion, safety management, and cooking quality meals in remote hut kitchens.
  • Hired raincoats leaked badly in heavy rain; one 25km day is genuinely tough for those without serious hiking fitness.
  • Hut lunches offer limited options due to remoteness; pre-trip prep instructions excellent but accommodation is deliberately spartan.
