Hiking Southern Iceland

Keflavik → Reykjavik 6 days Up to 16

About this trip

Six days of hiking through southern Iceland's glaciers, icefields, black sand beaches and fjords, based out of Reykjavík at the start and end.

This is a walking trip first — you cover some of the region's best routes on foot, from canyon rims to volcanic terrain, with a guide leading the way throughout.

Expect big, raw scenery rather than a packed sightseeing schedule. The days are built around getting out into the landscape, with a soak in a natural hot pool along the way.

What you'll do

  • Hike to the base of pounding waterfalls
  • Walk the rim of Múlagljúfur Canyon
  • Hike on Skaftafell Glacier
  • Trek around Mt. Laki
  • Bathe in a natural hot pool near Brennisteinsalda volcano
  • Start and finish in Reykjavík
Good to know
  • Moderate pace — this is a hiking-focused trip with several days of walking
  • Fully guided throughout, in a small group
  • Private room included, so no dorm-sharing
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want confident hiking with a knowledgeable guide and stunning scenery. Think twice if you're sensitive to bumpy transport or prefer gentler walks.

  • Guide Ronan's deep knowledge of Iceland and culture genuinely elevates the experience beyond standard hiking.
  • Sweet spot difficulty: challenging enough to feel rewarding without being brutal; hikes varied enough to stay engaging.
  • River crossings and bumpy transport are rough; stunning payoff, but not for those wanting smooth comfort.
  • Accommodation is comfortable between hikes; families and solo travellers both report feeling safe and supported.
