About this trip
Zagori is one of Greece's least-known corners, a region of stone villages, arched bridges and steep limestone gorges in the North Pindos National Park. This week is built around walking it properly, on foot, through beech forests and alpine terrain most visitors never see.
You'll spend days hiking Vikos Gorge and the trails around it, with time in Zagori's traditional villages to see the stonework and slower pace of life up close. The trip also takes you to Meteora, where you follow the old monks' paths up to the cliff-top monasteries.
It's a genuine hiking trip rather than a sightseeing tour with a few walks tacked on, so expect proper distances and some altitude, alongside decent food and the chance to get to know the area's history and wildlife.
What you'll do
- Hike through Vikos Gorge, one of the world's deepest canyons
- Wander the stone villages of Zagori and cross their historic arched bridges
- Hike to the alpine Dragon Lake at 2,100m
- Take in the views over Vikos Gorge from the Beloi viewpoint at 1,650m
- Follow the monks' trails up to the cliff-top monasteries of Meteora
- Spot the flora and fauna of Vikos-Aoos National Park
- This is a serious hiking itinerary with real mountain distances and altitude, not a leisurely walking holiday
- Fully guided throughout, suited to those who want to hike rather than sightsee
Worth it if you want off-the-beaten-path Greek hiking with exceptional guides. Think twice if you're claustrophobic or need spacious group transport.
- Guides consistently praised for local knowledge, adaptability, and fostering genuine group camaraderie throughout the week.
- Vikos Gorge and Astraka Mountain Hut to Dragon Lake sections deliver genuinely breathtaking views worth the challenging hikes.
- Mountain hut accommodation: poor ventilation in small rooms with multiple people can feel genuinely uncomfortable and disturbing.
- Group transport tight with large luggage; pre-trip gear coordination excellent but packing light still advisable.
