Peaks of the Balkans - Hike Beyond Borders in Albania & Montenegro

Start & end in Shkoder 8 days Up to 12

About this trip

This is an eight-day trek through the Accursed Mountains, crossing on foot between Albania and Montenegro rather than following any single country's trail network. You start in Shkodra, take a boat across Koman Lake into the Albanian Alps, and spend the following days walking through remote valleys and mountain passes.

The route takes you from Valbona Valley through the Gashi River Reserve to a night in a shepherd's hut at Doberdol, then up Mt. Trekufiri where the borders of Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo meet. From there you continue into Montenegro's Prokletije National Park before looping back into Albania via an old caravan route.

It ends in Theth, where you learn about the Kanun code and highland traditions before returning to Shkodra. This is a serious, guided trek for people who want genuine mountain days rather than a gentle countryside walk.

What you'll do

  • Cross the fjord-like Koman Lake by boat to reach Valbona National Park
  • Trek through the Gashi River Reserve to an overnight stay in a shepherd's hut at Doberdol
  • Climb Mt. Trekufiri, the point where three national borders meet
  • Swim in Lake Hrid and ascend the twin peaks of Taljanka and Popadija above Grbaja Valley
  • Follow an old caravan route back into Albania and attempt the climb of Mt. Arapi
  • Visit the Blue Eye spring and learn about Kanun tradition in Theth
Good to know
  • A serious mountain trek with long hiking days and one rustic night in a shepherd's hut
  • You cross on foot between Albania and Montenegro, so border formalities are part of the route
  • Suits hikers wanting real altitude and remote terrain rather than a leisurely walking holiday
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want genuinely brilliant guides, stunning scenery and authentic local culture. Think twice if you dislike physically demanding hikes or need predictable comfort.

  • Guides consistently exceptional: Tesi, Donjeta, Drini, Erint and Ina all praised for knowledge, kindness, flexibility and going above and beyond.
  • Food and accommodation surprisingly good given remote mountain locations; guesthouse connections memorable and meals fantastic throughout.
  • Hikes are genuinely demanding and challenging; several reviewers stress physical toughness despite guides accommodating varying abilities.
  • Tour remains flexible to group needs: one group had two people leave early but continued hiking without losing a day.
