About this trip
Four days on foot across the Andes, following the old Inca route through mountain passes and cloud forest to reach Machu Picchu on foot rather than by train or bus.
You walk with a small group and a trekking crew who handle the camping, cooking and route-finding, leaving you to focus on the trail itself and the ruins along the way.
The final morning brings an early start to reach the Sun Gate for sunrise, with Machu Picchu spread out below as the clouds lift.
What you'll do
- Trek the classic Inca Trail through Andean mountain scenery
- Stop at Inca ruins along the route, including Wiñay Wayna
- Camp trailside with meals cooked by the trekking crew
- Cross high mountain passes on foot
- Arrive at the Sun Gate for sunrise over Machu Picchu
- Guided walk through Machu Picchu itself
- This is a multi-day trek at altitude, so a reasonable level of fitness matters
- You sleep in tents for most of the trip, not hotels
- Porters and guides handle logistics, but you're on your feet for several hours most days
Worth it if you book well ahead, embrace the crowds, and get a knowledgeable guide. Think twice if you want solitude or are a trekking beginner unfit for steep terrain.
- Walking actual Incan stone steps and entering Machu Picchu via Sungate delivers on the ancient history promise genuinely.
- Guides like Jose and Junior, native Quechua speakers, transform the trek by translating local interactions and explaining Incan culture in real time.
- Expect heavy crowds and hiking in queues, especially high season; solitude seekers should consider alternative treks instead.
- Book permits months ahead; limited daily permits mean early planning is non-negotiable to secure a spot.
