About this trip
The classic four-day Inca Trail, walked on the original Incan stone paths through cloud forest and past ruins that only reveal themselves properly when you're on foot. It builds towards the moment most people come for: your first view of Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, earned rather than driven to.
Each day mixes solid hiking with big mountain views and enough time to actually take in the history rather than rush past it. A personal porter carries up to 7kg so your daypack stays light, and camps come with premium tents, portable toilets, and hot meals waiting at the end of the trail.
You finish with the Vistadome panoramic train back, a proper way to decompress after the climb and let the scenery do the talking on the way home.
What you'll do
- Trek the original Inca stone paths through cloud forest
- Reach Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate on foot
- Explore centuries-old ruins along the route
- Travel back on the Vistadome panoramic train
- Small group hiking with an expert local guide
- A personal porter carries up to 7kg of your kit, but you still walk the route under your own steam
- Camping each night, with premium tents and portable toilets rather than hotel stops
- A satellite phone is carried for safety given the remote sections of trail
Worth it if you're fit enough for a genuinely tough four-day hike and want to feel properly looked after. Think twice if you need a leisurely pace or dislike early starts and altitude.
- Guides consistently named as knowledgeable, warm, and funny; porters heroically set up camps ahead while you hike light.
- Food quality and accommodation of dietary requests (vegetarian catered for) repeatedly praised; chefs named as exceptional.
- Multiple reviewers describe this as one of the hardest physical challenges they've faced; significantly more demanding than expected.
- Timing engineered so you enter Machu Picchu at dawn via Sun Gate, but this requires very early starts throughout.
