About this trip
Three days built around a single goal: standing near a wild mountain gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It starts and ends in Kigali, Rwanda, rather than Uganda's own airports, since the drive to Bwindi is roughly half the time.
Most of your first and third days are spent on the road crossing the border, with the trek itself the centrepiece of day two. It is a stripped-back, no-frills way to tick off gorilla trekking without building a longer Uganda itinerary around it.
What you'll do
- Trek through Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to track a mountain gorilla family
- Cross overland from Kigali into southwestern Uganda
- Spend time observing gorillas in their natural habitat with a guide
- Return overland to Kigali to finish the trip
- Long driving days on day one and day three (4-5 hours each way between Kigali and Bwindi)
- Physically demanding — the trek itself involves hiking through forest terrain, sometimes steep and muddy
- Suited to travellers who want gorilla trekking specifically, not a broader Uganda safari
Worth it if you want an unforgettable gorilla encounter with genuinely attentive guides. Think twice if basic lodge amenities and long driving days bother you.
- Guides (Fred, Amanya, Jackson, Herbert, Eric) consistently go above and beyond, making you feel safe and sharing local culture generously.
- The gorilla trekking itself delivers: families of 13 appearing close, spending an hour in your presence—genuinely magical and worth the $800 permit cost.
- Lodge accommodation is basic (one outlet, minimal lighting, intermittent WiFi, power outages)—functional but spartan, not comfortable for everyone.
- 5-hour drive from Kigali plus border crossing adds significant travel time; expect a full day of driving before and after trekking.
