About this trip
Three days on the road between Marrakech and Fes, tracing a route through mountains, gorges and desert that most visitors only see in photos. You cover a lot of ground, but the landscapes do the heavy lifting.
The route climbs through the High Atlas and its Berber villages before dropping into the Dades and Todra Gorges, then out to the dunes at Merzouga for a night in the desert. From there you loop back north through the Middle Atlas towns to finish in Fes.
The desert night is the centrepiece — camel ride at sunset, dinner and music at a luxury camp, then sleeping out under the stars before an early start the next morning.
What you'll do
- See the Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO-listed fortified village
- Drive through the Dades Gorges and Todra Gorge
- Ride a camel into the Merzouga dunes at sunset
- Overnight in a luxury desert camp with a traditional dinner and Berber music
- Pass through Ifrane and Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains
- Cross the Skoura Oasis and Rose Valley en route
- Fast-paced — this is a lot of driving over three days with a new base most nights
- Best suited to those happy to trade some comfort in transit for the payoff of the desert camp
Worth it if you tolerate long travel days and heat. Think twice if you need consistent food quality or air-conditioned transport.
- Desert camp itself is genuinely comfortable; starry Sahara night and Berber home visits genuinely memorable.
- Three early starts, 14-hour minibus days without AC in heat—brutal. Food quality wildly inconsistent between stops.
- Driver Youssef and guide Abdo get real praise for kindness and making people feel looked after.
- Minibus uncomfortable but trip well-organised overall. Tip local guides—it matters to them.
