About this trip
Seven days through the M'Zab Valley and the oases of the Algerian Sahara, taking in a UNESCO-listed landscape of 11th century fortified villages built to work with, not against, the desert.
You move between the five M'Zab villages, the palm-fringed oasis town of El-Meniaa known for its produce and roses, and the red-walled architecture of Gourara, where an old hand-built irrigation system still channels water through the town.
It closes in Algiers, with a walk through the Casbah and a visit to a botanical garden first laid out in 1832, before you head home.
What you'll do
- Walk the fortified villages of Ghardaia, Beni Isguen, Melika, Bounoura and El Atteuf in the M'Zab Valley
- See the Fougara irrigation system at work in the red oasis of Gourara
- Visit El-Meniaa, an oasis town known for its roses, produce and mineral water reservoir
- Watch a performance of Qarkabo, the traditional dance of the region
- Explore the Casbah of Algiers
- Visit the Test Garden, a botanical garden dating to 1832
- A relaxed, guided pace suited to families and groups rather than independent exploring
- Church visits are included where possible, depending on location
Worth it if you crave authentic, off-beat desert culture and can handle logistical roughness. Think twice if you need fluent English guides or polished infrastructure.
- Guides and operators genuinely warm, helpful, and go above and beyond—Belleragueb and Azzedine's teams earned repeated praise.
- English-speaking guides sparse; one reviewer faced 7 days of French-only tours despite trip marketed as English-speaking.
- Hotel quality inconsistent—at least one property in Golea reported dirty; itinerary lacks upfront detail about accommodation standards.
- Ramadan travel is manageable if you're flexible; some found it enriched cultural immersion, but meals and pace differ sharply.
