Best of Spain & Portugal (Small Group Tour)

Barcelona → Madrid 11 days Up to 24

About this trip

Eleven days across Spain and Portugal, moving from big cities to small university towns to the Atlantic coast. You start in Barcelona and end in Lisbon, with a proper spread of architecture, food and history in between.

The route takes in Madrid, the stone streets of Salamanca, Porto's riverfront, the canals of Aveiro, Coimbra's old university and the Batalha Monastery, before the surfing town of Nazaré and a last stop at the Roman ruins in Mérida. It's a lot of ground, but each stop earns its place rather than feeling like a box to tick.

This suits you if you want variety over depth — a working sense of both countries rather than settling into one place.

What you'll do

  • Wander Gaudí's Barcelona before heading inland to Madrid
  • Walk the UNESCO streets of Salamanca
  • Try port wine in Porto and stroll the Aveiro canals
  • See the Gothic scale of Batalha Monastery
  • Watch the waves at Nazaré, famous for its big surf
  • Finish among the Roman ruins of Mérida
Good to know
  • Fast-paced — you change base most nights across two countries
  • Fully guided throughout, with private rooms available
  • Good fit for families or groups wanting history and cities without a heavy hiking element
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you value intimate group dynamics and curated cultural depth. Think twice if you dislike long travel days or prefer a slower pace.

  • Small group size enabled genuine connections with guides Ana and Jose, plus fellow travellers.
  • Thoughtful itinerary balance: structured guided experiences paired with meaningful free time in Madrid and Porto.
  • Several long travel days tested stamina, though most felt the sights justified the demanding pace.
  • Private driver and mostly private tours included, plus hotels were conveniently located near local attractions.
