About this trip
This 11-day route follows Brazil's Costa Verde south from Rio de Janeiro to the car-free island of Ilha Grande, mixing city sightseeing with slower coastal and island time.
You spend four nights in Rio taking in the city's landmarks and beaches, then move on to the colonial town of Paraty before finishing on Ilha Grande, where beaches, trails and boats replace roads.
The pace is unhurried — each base gets several nights, so there's room to explore at your own speed rather than rushing between stops.
What you'll do
- Ride the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain
- See Christ the Redeemer from Corcovado Mountain
- Walk Ipanema and Copacabana beaches in Rio
- Wander Paraty's cobblestone colonial streets
- Ferry to Ilha Grande and hike to Lopes Mendes Beach
- Explore Ilha Grande by bike, on foot, or by kayak
- Ilha Grande has no cars, so getting around is on foot, by bike, or by boat
- Structured around three main bases (Rio, Paraty, Ilha Grande) with time to settle into each rather than a packed daily itinerary
