About this trip
Eight days split between Marrakech's energy and the quiet of the High Atlas Mountains, based mostly in one village rather than moving on each night. You get a real feel for both sides of Morocco without rushing between them.
In Tijhza you stay in a modest riad and take optional daily walks through the mountains at a relaxed pace, with time to meet the Amazigh people who live there and understand something of their daily life. There's also the chance to try a traditional hammam, part of an ongoing responsible tourism project in the village.
Marrakech brings a change of pace entirely — palaces, souks, and free evenings to wander Jemaa el-Fnaa with its food stalls, juice sellers and musicians.
What you'll do
- Base yourself in the mountain village of Tijhza for several days
- Take optional guided walks through the High Atlas at a relaxed pace
- Meet Amazigh families and learn about their way of life
- Try a traditional hammam as part of a local responsible tourism project
- Explore Marrakech's palaces and souks
- Spend free evenings at Jemaa el-Fnaa
- Walks each day are optional, so the pace suits those who want downtime as well as hiking
- You're based in one village for the mountain section rather than trekking hut to hut
- Accommodation in Tijhza is a modest riad, not luxury
Worth it if you're fit, love mountains, and value authentic culture over comfort. Think twice if you need luxury accommodation or underestimate the 18-mile walks.
- Guide Hassan is genuinely excellent, knowledgeable about Berber culture, and keeps groups safe and together.
- Altitude sickness hits day one; gite accommodation is basic, not for luxury seekers; ATMs fail on Moroccan holidays.
- 18-mile lake walk requires real fitness and proper ankle-support boots; soft trainers won't cut it on rocky terrain.
- Homemade food is consistently excellent; authentic homestays and souk haggling beat typical package holiday sterility.
