About this trip
Seven days in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains, starting from Marrakech, with the summit of Mount Toubkal — the highest point in North Africa — as the goal. You sleep in mountain gites and trekking huts along the way, with a guided crew and pack mules carrying the heavy gear.
The route builds gradually, with a day built in to acclimatise before the push to altitude. That makes it workable for first-time trekkers as well as those with more mountain experience, though you'll still need a reasonable level of fitness for summit day.
Expect village paths, changing mountain scenery, and a real sense of achievement standing on the roof of North Africa.
What you'll do
- Trek through the High Atlas Mountains with an expert guide and pack mules
- Acclimatise with a day exploring villages at your own pace
- Summit Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa
- Overnight in traditional mountain gites and trekking huts
- Start and explore Marrakech before heading into the mountains
- You need to be reasonably fit and healthy — summit day is demanding, though previous climbing experience isn't essential
- This trip spends time at altitude, so it's worth understanding the associated health risks before you go
- Travelling during Ramadan may mean some restaurants and services are limited during the day, and your leader may adjust the itinerary accordingly
Worth it if you're fit, want a properly guided mountain experience, and don't need hand-holding from customer service beforehand. Think twice if you need detailed pre-trip communication or have dietary requirements that need confirming in advance.
- Guide quality is genuinely exceptional—Mo, Youssef, Lahcen consistently praised as knowledgeable, flexible, and personally attentive even when trekkers got ill.
- Food provision is generous and accommodating; vegetarian options handled seamlessly, though portions large enough that one reviewer flagged waste.
- Pre-trip admin from Intrepid is poor—fitness forms arrive day-of, add-on details unavailable, customer service unresponsive until departure date.
- Mountain experience suits committed trekkers; Marrakech portion noted as an acquired taste, not universally loved by all participants.
