Contrasts of Mexico + Yucatan Peninsula

Mexico City → Merida 21 days Up to 18

About this trip

A long overland route through Mexico's ancient and colonial heartland, starting in Mexico City and finishing after crossing into Guatemala and Belize. You move by coach between sites, with a mix of big cities, ruins and smaller colonial towns.

Expect Aztec, Zapotec and Maya history throughout, from Palenque's jungle temples to Tikal across the border, alongside time in Oaxaca and San Cristobal de las Casas to see how people actually live and eat.

Some departures are timed around Dia de los Muertos, if you want to see that particular celebration rather than just the ruins and markets.

What you'll do

  • Explore Mexico City before heading into the country's colonial towns
  • Wander the Zocalo and markets of Oaxaca
  • Visit the Mayan ruins at Palenque and, later, Tikal in Guatemala
  • Take a boat trip through Sumidero Canyon, watching for wildlife
  • Spend time in San Cristobal de las Casas
  • Cross overland into Guatemala and Belize as part of the route
Good to know
  • Moderate pace over 21 days with a lot of ground covered by coach
  • Route crosses international borders into Guatemala and Belize
  • Day of the Dead departures exist if you want to time your trip around that
